Resources for Tutors

Disclaimer: The following sites are to be used to create individualized lessons. You will need to keep your lists and activities controlled based on your Orton-Gillingham training. These sites are not necessarily endorsed by IMSLEC, but, with a discerning eye, they can be used to create lesson plans for your students.

Rewordify.com simplifies difficult English. A new website that can help tutors adapt reading material for more controlled readings can be found at rewordify.com. Students can use it, too. “Enter hard sentences (or whole chapters) into the yellow box at the top of the page. (You can also enter a web site URL.) Click Rewordify text and you’ll instantly see an easier version, for fast understanding. The reworded words are highlighted— click them to hear and learn the original harder word. You can change how the highlighting works to match the way you learn!”

Orton-Gillingham Method Resources for Certified Tutors

  • WordWorks Literacy Centre: Peter Bowers, PhD, is the founder of the WordWorks Literacy Centre in Ontario, Canada. For most of his ten years as an elementary school teacher in international schools and in Canada, Peter shared the common view that English spelling is highly irregular and full of exceptions to be memorized. He took this idea and ran with it. His site has amazing resources for all who teach the English Language. Hint: Scroll to the bottom of the page.
  • Beyond the Word Blogspot: Amazing topics are covered in this blog. A journey with writer, Lyn Anderson, and the journey of many others who are empowered and inspired to investigate how the structure of the English spelling system really works.
  • The International Multisensory Structural Language Education Council Website: All tutors at the Children’s Dyslexic Center are certified by this council.
  • Children’s Dyslexia Center, Inc. Website: The corporate office for our Children’s Dyslexia Center – Southern Illinois includes a list of all the agencies’ websites that offer training and more.
  • https://mlc.learningstewards.org/olsn-install/  This is an app/chrome extension that creates “interactive orthography” for all the words on websites.  If you click the word it decodes the word and breaks it into syllables.  then you can click another button for the definition, roots, synonyms, etc.  Anything a teacher puts in Google drive or any of the educational websites they use, are supported.

Websites that are Helpful for Creating Individualized Lessons:

A favorite standby for finding specific words is an online dictionary or the online rhymer. Additional resources that may involve a cost can be http://www.dyslexiadictionary.com as well as
http://www.wordspeller.net.
